Worship every Sunday in our beautiful sanctuary

Our services begin at 11:00am with refreshments following

Children's Sunday School Programming is available during the service and will begin for the fall season on September 15.

Recognition of the Territorial Land

Our location on the historic Carrying Place Trail (Weston Road) reminds us that we meet on the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Petun, Seneca and, most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit.  We hope this ancient path will be a symbol of our desire to walk with Indigenous peoples in a spirit of reconciliation and respect.

Central is also the location of the Central King Seniors Residence, (CKSR) with a mix of market and rent-geared-to-income units for independent seniors living.

Members and friends of Central may attend services in person or over Zoom at 11:00 a.m. on Sundays, receive weekly email including recorded worship from the week before, receive a text-based copy of the upcoming worship service, and attend social events hosted by the congregation.

History

Central United Church is a historic congregation of The United Church of Canada. Central is located in the community of Weston, part of the City of Toronto, Ontario. The church has been on the same site on Weston Road since 1821. The congregation began as part of the Methodist Episcopal Church, a forerunner of the Methodist Church in Canada, (1884) and The United Church of Canada (1925).

The first church building, a log structure, was erected in 1821, followed by a larger brick church built in 1849. The present building, dedicated in 1887, and built in the Gothic revival style, has been altered and updated on several occasions. It retains the landmark tower, easily seen and recognized. The tower includes examples of abatsons - an architectural device consisting of louvres used to reflect sound - the results of which can be heard through excellent acoustics.  The church was one of the final projects of the famous architect, William Henry Mallory Sr.

The congregation has a rich musical heritage. The organ is a Casavant and was dedicated in 1950 as a memorial to the members of the congregation who gave their lives in the Second World War. The Chancellors, a youth choir, active from 1968-1980, produced five record albums and toured extensively across Canada and Europe.

The congregation has been faithfully served by dedicated ministers and volunteers. Today, Central is known for its outreach into the Weston neighbourhood and community. Through the Weston King Neighbourhood Centre (WKNC), the Weston Area Emergency Support (WAES) Food Bank, and its commitment to Indigenous Reconciliation, and Social Justice work around the world through the Mission and Service Fund, Central continues to be a community where the good news of the gospel is lived each day.
